Friends of MOTU A.M.!
The raw tones and swift melodies of Ballroom Boxer flourished from the music rich cities of Akron, OH, Chicago and Nashville. Previously named the Whiskey Drifters, the new swagger of the band started when guitarist/backup vocalist Donnie Renner met drummer Dave Altier through a mutual friend at Middle Tennessee State University. Upon Dave’s recommendation, lead singer/guitarist Mike Altier flew to Nashville and met the potential addition. They talked Second City, Guns N’ Roses, and classic comedy over shots of whiskey and the rest, as they say, is history.
Building on their past accolades including opening up for Velvet Revolver, Buckcherry, Sponge, Gilby Clark and headlining the Cleveland Music Festival, the band decided to officially add Donnie and go into the studio with producer Jim Stewart (30 Seconds to Mars, Plain White T’s).
What came out of it? A culmination of Rubber City’s rock n’ roll edge, Music City’s country roots and the Windy City’s big shoulder blues. True to the name, Ballroom Boxer is a dichotomy between heavy-hearted, genuine emotion and ferocious self-reflection and excess. They’re what you get when you drop the Great Gatsby, Johnnie Walker and fireworks in a blender and hit liquefy.
